Sanghar is the kind of town travellers pass through on the way to somewhere louder. That's a quiet gift — within an hour's drive there are dunes, lakes, a desert sanctuary and three of Sindh's most underrated bazaars. Here are five day trips our guests come back from with the best stories.
1. Achro Thar — The White Desert
The white-sand stretch of the Thar Desert begins about 90 minutes east of Sanghar. Unlike the red dunes around Mithi, Achro Thar is a paler, almost bone-white expanse — best at sunrise, when the light hits the crests and you can see the wind moving them in slow motion.
Bring: water, a scarf for the dust, and either a 4×4 or a driver who knows the back tracks. We can introduce you to a driver before you set out.
2. Makhi Forest
A protected riverine forest along the Indus, Makhi is what southern Sindh looked like before the cotton ginning mills. About two hours from Sanghar by car. Bird watchers — bring binoculars. The forest still hosts hog deer, jackals, and (if you're lucky and quiet) a fishing cat.
3. Khipro
A market town about 45 minutes south, famous for its block-printed ajrak and brass work. Wednesday mornings are best — the wholesale traders set up by 7 AM, and you can be back at the guest house in time for lunch.
4. Sinjhoro and the Indus Loop
Sinjhoro is half an hour west — a quiet riverside town with a Sufi shrine and one of the most photographed bends of the Indus. Combine it with a stop at the canal-side dhabas on the way back; the fried fish in winter is excellent.
5. Tando Adam Bazaar
If you have only half a day, drive 40 minutes north to Tando Adam. The old textile bazaar is still mostly hand-loomed, and the local Sindhi sweet shop (ask for gulgula) is worth the trip on its own.
